Singles Day at Wineandbarrels
Singles Day on 11 November is the first of three big shopping days in our November calendar. The offers go live at the start of the month and run through Black Week, Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
What is Singles Day?
Singles Day began at Nanjing University in 1993, when students marked 11 November as a celebration of their single status. The date was chosen because 11.11 is four ones, each symbolising an individual.
In 2009 the Chinese e-commerce company Alibaba turned the day into an online shopping event, and it has grown enormously since – now outselling both Black Friday and Cyber Monday. It has long since spread beyond China, and over time it has shifted from a celebration of being single into a broader occasion for treating yourself.
